Chimney Cowls were normally used to help with the draft of a chimney and prevent backflow. The Cowls are fitted to the top of the chimney pot to prevent wind blowing the smoke back down into the room beneath. Cowls are still common for restoration and new builds, however, Chimney Cowls and Hoods have also made their way into many gardens as ornaments.
